Japan Holidays - Details

In a previous post, I told you what were the holidays in Japan. Today, I'm going to explain about each one!

New Year's Day	January 1st	1948	As in other countries, in this day, the new year is celebrated.
Coming of Age Day	Second Monday of January	1948	In this day, there are a lot of ceremonies hold to congratulate and encourage people who have reach the age of maturity (20).
Foundation Day	February 11th	1966	This is a day to reflect the establishment of the nation and to nourish the love for the country. It is said to be the day that Emperor Jimmu acceded to the throne in 660 BC.
Vernal Equinox Day	March 20th/21st	1948	Day for the admiration of Nature and the love for living things.
Showa Day	April 29th	2007	Day to reflect on the events of the Showa period. It was originally the birthday of the previous Emperor Showa. It marks the start of the Golden Week holiday period.
Constitution Memorial Day	May 3rd	1948	This holiday was established to commemorate the day on which Japan's postwar constitution took effect.
Greenery Day	May 4th	2007	Day to commune with Nature and to be grateful for its blessings.
Children's Day	May 5th	1948	Day to esteem the personalities of children and pray for their happiness. This day marks the end of the Golden Week holiday period.
Marine Day	Third Monday of July	1995	Day of gratitude for the blessings of the oceans and to pray for the prosperity of the maritime nation that is Japan.
Respect-for-the-Aged Day	Third Monday of September	1966	Day to respect the elderly and celebrate long life.
Autumn Equinox Day	September 22nd/23rd	1948	Day to honor one's ancestors and remember the dead.
Health and Sports Day	Second Monday of October	1966	Day to enjoy sports and cultivate a healthy mind and body. It was originally the day to celebrate the opening ceremony of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
Culture Day	November 3rd	1948	Day to celebrate peace, freedom and celebrate culture. It was originally the birthday of Emperor Meiji.
Labour Thanksgiving Day	November 23rd	1948	In this day, people praise labor, celebrate production and give one another thanks.
The Emperor's Birthday	December 23rd	1868	Emperor Akihito (reigning Emperor) birthday.

Some of these holidays' dates have changed before. The "establishment date" which I wrote corresponds to the first time that day was created, whenever it was.

You must have noticed that there are four movable holidays, which are all in Mondays. This is part of a set of modifications to Japanese law, which is called Happy Monday System. Its goal is to create a three-day weekend for those who normally have a five-day work week.
