As you should already know by seeing the Tokyo subway map, there are a lot of lines! So, how to memorize them? Colors don't work very well. The result would be something like: "the dark-blue line goes north, and the light-blue line goes south".
So they chose a letter from each line name to identify it! It's actually quite intuitive, in my opinion!
By the way, today is a national holiday in Japan! It's the National Foundation Day (建国記念の日, けんこくきねんのひ, kenkoku kinen no hi), day that celebrates the foundation of Japan, and the accession of its first Emperor, Emperor Jinmu (神武天皇, year 660 BC) (picture below).
