Today is Hina Matsuri (雛祭り) or Doll's Festival, or Girls' Day!
It's held everyday on March 3rd, and it's a day to pray for the healthy growth and happy future of young girls / daughters.
It's believed that the dolls possess the power to keep evil spirits away, protecting its owners. An ancient Japanese tradition called Hina Nagashi (雛流し) is on its origin, and it was a day when people made paper dolls and sent them floating on the river carrying evil spirits away.
Currently, the set of ornamental dolls represents the Emperor, Empress, attendants, musicians in traditional court dress of the Heian period.
Let's pray for a good year! ^-^
